later Daddy takes his pills again and cleans the counters and brings tulips home
It’s now July and the girl watches fat bees gorge on orchids She picks one that’s apricot orange
After school she rides the bus to see Mummy but the flowers are already rusting at the tips “Thank you sweetie”
Says the nurse “I’ll make sure she gets it when she wakes up”

I’ve always loved prose poems, and I think you did a wonderful job with this one. I love the image of the little girl painting her toenails in the mirror. Such a vivid image! 🙂

I haven’t reached that stage yet, currently just studying Creative Writing at university to hone in my skills. I can imagine it being very nerve racking to begin submitting your work

The creative writing classes at my university made a huge difference in the quality of my writing — enjoy them!
I think a blog is a great way to prepare yourself to submit. Blogging allows you to put your work out in the world without the pressure of a potential rejection. Though I suppose you could always get nasty comments… I haven’t seen that happen too much on WordPress. I’m glad for that 🙂

I’m only in my first year but I can already see major improvements in my work, so satisfying.
I agree, that’s partly why I made it its a nice little confidence boost.

Awesome! Imagine how good your work will be by the end 🙂 When you’re ready to start submitting, check to see if your university has a journal of their own. Most large universities do. This is a great first place to submit because often you’ll know the editors and it will feel less scary.

Yeah mine has one, but I don’t know, I’ve been sceptical of submitting my work. Just a confidence thing I guess, need to do more writing and hopefully that’ll come naturally.
How did you go about submitting your work? I don’t even know how I’d approach that

It differs based on each journal. Most university journals will post fliers and send out a mass email. At my school, submissions were due by the end of the fall semester, and the journal was published around spring break.
Most non-school journals will have a submissions tab on their website with info on how and when to submit. For example, here’s a journal open to college students but not university-based: http://www.siblinijournal.com/
Under submit, they have info on what they accept and how to send it to them 🙂

Just make sure you follow all the instructions provided, and it’s honestly that easy! Getting accepted is the hard part, of course, but the more you write, the better you’ll be. Stick with it and you’ll go places 🙂
